There are a myriad of Halloween costumes. Common choices are superheroes and fairy tale creatures. Some even opt to be inanimate objects like the plug and socket tandem. But the most popular of all is mimicking the blood-thirsty creatures of the night – the scary vampire costume.

You could buy ready-made outfits at designer shops, thrift stores or online shops. But it would be much more fun if you personalize it. Add your personality to it. Picture yourself with vampire traits. Does the sun scare you? Are you purely nocturnal? You might be surprised with the vampire type you could be.

It may require some work, but a unique and truly scary vampire outfit could set your neighbors to a run. Perhaps Count Dracula is the constant image you think of when you want a scary costume. When budget’s too tight, improvise. Pair up button-down long-sleeved polo shirt and any black pants. Be a vamp vampire – wear a tight blouse and a long side-slit skirt. You could also lose the cape if you feel it’s too old school. If not, buy two or more yards of black and red cloth, freehand stitch the hems, add matching strings on top edges and it’s good to go. Use any hypoallergenic white face powder to be applied to your whole face. If you don’t want gloves, you could also apply the same powder to the back of your hands. For the fake blood, mix up corn syrup, red dye and soy sauce. The mixture could look so realistic; you might scare off the whole neighborhood. Fangs are a choice among rubber/plastic inserts, adhesives, or alginate impressions which are Plaster-of-Paris-like mixtures. You could also research for numerous do-it-yourself fangs. Finish the look with perfectly slicked hair with pomade or gel. Also, have colored contacts to emphasize your eyes, red and white tints are popular choices. In the modern face of vampires like HBO’s True Blood, they don’t have frightening vampire costumes. They blend right in with the humans. For this look, wear casual clothes but with New Orleans-French Quarter style – big belt buckles, white linen and antique jewelries. To be a True Blood vampire, carry a box of TruBlood Synthetic Blood. Empty 6 bottles, pour in your blood mixture, and stick them with TruBlood logo. You could also convince your friends by being a nest of vampires. Make dummies out of old dolls or stitch up rag dolls, which would be your victims. Make coffins out of big appliances boxes. Paint them with the wood effect of simple black. Drag your coffin filled with your dummy victims, and also use it as your treat bag. Do your vampire costumes and props during sleepovers or just plain hanging out.
